If you’re anything like me, you have a million things going on all at once, vying for your attention, and making you feel slightly insane and possibly immobile. This is what I call being in overwhelm. It’s not a pleasant state but there is a cure that doesn’t require you to ditch your whole lifestyle.
Start simply.
For each day, figure out the top three most important things for you to focus on and/or get done for the day. What’s most important? What will you be bummed you didn’t accomplish at the end of the day?
Stuff that you want to do or need to do everyday (like exercising, eating healthy and taking your kids to school) don’t count towards the three most important things. Instead you need to establish a daily routine for these repetitive tasks and projects, incorporating them into the fabric of your everyday.
Establishing a schedule helps many people, such as exercising at a the same time each day and having the same meals for each day (like taco Tuesday). This takes a lot of the guesswork out of your day, allowing you the energy to focus on less mundane things.
Once these repetitive tasks are sorted out (made part of your routine), you can then figure out the top three things to focus on per day.
Yes — you will probably get loads more done than three things, unless of course these three things take a lot of time and energy, but as long as you accomplish your three things, you will feel accomplished for the day and a lot less overwhelmed. In fact you’ll probably get more done than if you had a list of ten things to get done. Focusing on too many options at once can be paralyzing, causing us to do nothing.
Start small. Start today.
