As a writer, I’ve always believed in the power of self expression. It’s something I do everyday in my journal. It’s also something I’ve come to do through my photography, design work, coaching and recently sewing. My creativity is constantly seeking an outlet and I’m afraid I’d burst without it.

It really doesn’t matter the form your expression takes but what’s most important is that you find an avenue to express yourself in one way or another.

It’s not always easy to express yourself, especially when faced with conflicting opinions, closed-minded people, the fear of rejection and/or the fear of not being accepted. It’s hard to put yourself out there. But know there is power in being authentic to yourself and expressing who you are.

Not everyone’s going to get you and that’s OK. The right people will connect with you at the right time and that’s what’s most important. And even if no one connects with you and the work you’re doing is only for yourself (like your journal or art could be), taking the time for self-expression feeds you in a way that nothing else can. It fills your soul and allows you the freedom to be truly yourself.

Here are some reasons why self-expression is so important:

1. It lets yourself out. By expressing yourself in one way or another (the way isn’t what’s most important), you free yourself. You allow yourself to be authentic and real and truthful. You also allow yourself to stumble upon surprising aspects of yourself, little gems that you never knew existed and would continue not to know if you had kept it all locked up.

2. It boosts your creativity. The more you express yourself, the more you will have to express. It’s not like a pitcher of beer that diminishes itself with each pour but more like a flame that can light up the world if you let it, one candle at a time, growing and growing.

3. It allows you to shine. Whether or not you share your expressions with anyone, expressing yourself through any form allows you to shine and radiate your true light. If it’s a true expression of who you are, you will expand and feel filled up. It’s also an excellent way of clearing out all the junk that’s piled up inside you. Ever hear of Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way? If not, check it out. She talks about writing three pages every morning as a way to clear the junk.

4. It releases stress and anxiety. Getting lost in a creative project and/or expression is a wonderful way to release stress and anxiety. By getting into the flow and allowing yourself to express in whatever way you want, you’ll quickly let go of your fears and worries, finding inner peace and calmness instead.

I only have one rule for you when it comes to self expression and that is to allow yourself to do whatever is called for you to do. I don’t care how stupid it may sound or how much it doesn’t make sense, if you’re feeling like doing it, do it. And forget about being perfect or getting it right or whose going to see it. Just do. Have fun and do it.

I’d love to know how you’re expressing yourself. Please share in the comments below.
